Welcome to Graven Hill Remembers

Graven Hill: From Military Base to Thriving Community
Section titled “Graven Hill: From Military Base to Thriving Community”Graven Hill, now the UK’s largest self-build development, has a rich and storied military history that spans decades of service and sacrifice.
The Early Years: St David’s Barracks
Section titled “The Early Years: St David’s Barracks”The land we now call Graven Hill was once home to St David’s Barracks, a vital military installation that served as the base for the 23 Pioneer Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps. For generations, this site was a hub of military training, preparation, and operational planning.
From World War I through to modern operations in Iraq (Operation Telic) and Afghanistan (Operation Herrick), Pioneers trained and deployed from this very ground. They built roads, cleared minefields, disposed of explosives, and undertook some of the most dangerous work in military operations.
The Pioneer Corps Legacy
Section titled “The Pioneer Corps Legacy”The Pioneer Corps played an essential role in British military history:
- World War I: Pioneers supported front-line troops with construction and logistics
- World War II: The Corps grew to one of the largest in the Army
- Modern Operations: Served with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan
- Final Chapter: 23 Pioneer Regiment was disbanded in September 2014
Their motto, “Labour Omnia Vincit” (Work Conquers All), embodied their dedication and service.
The Transition to Graven Hill
Section titled “The Transition to Graven Hill”In 2014, the Ministry of Defence handed over the St David’s Barracks site to Cherwell District Council for redevelopment. This marked the beginning of an ambitious vision: to create the UK’s largest self-build housing development.
Today, Graven Hill is a thriving community where individuals and families design and build their own unique homes. The development continues to grow, with new streets and homes being added regularly.
Remembering Those Who Served
Section titled “Remembering Those Who Served”Many of the street names throughout Graven Hill honour fallen soldiers who served with the Pioneer Regiment and other units. These names serve as a lasting tribute to brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country.
This website is dedicated to researching and sharing the stories behind these names - ensuring that the heroes of St David’s Barracks are never forgotten.
Our Ongoing Mission
Section titled “Our Ongoing Mission”As Graven Hill continues to expand with new streets being named, we are committed to:
- Discovering the stories behind all street names
- Honouring fallen soldiers whose names we see every day
- Preserving military history of the St David’s Barracks site
- Connecting with families and veterans who have information to share
As serving soldiers ourselves, we work closely with the Bicester Pioneer Association, who provide invaluable information and support for this website. We also have connections with the MOD and Bicester Town Council to help uncover these important histories. This is a work in progress, and we will continue to add new information as it becomes available.
