Our Heritage

Graven Hill, now the UK’s largest self-build development, has a rich military history. This land was once home to St David’s Barracks, the base of the 23 Pioneer Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps.

The Pioneer Corps served with distinction from World War I through to operations in Iraq (Operation Telic) and Afghanistan (Operation Herrick). Many of our street names honour the memory of these brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country.

The Corps played a vital role in military operations, providing essential engineering, construction, and logistics support. From building roads and bridges to clearing minefields and disposing of explosives, Pioneers were always at the forefront of dangerous and demanding work.

St David’s Barracks in Bicester was the home of the 23 Pioneer Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps. The barracks served as a training and operational base for thousands of soldiers over many decades.

The site was a hub of military activity, where soldiers prepared for deployments around the world and where many returned home after serving their country with honour.

In 2014, the MOD handed over the site to Cherwell District Council for development. Today, Graven Hill is a thriving community of self-builders creating unique homes and a vibrant neighbourhood.

Despite this transformation from military base to civilian community, we remain committed to remembering and honouring those who served here and the fallen heroes whose names we see every day.

23 Pioneer Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps was disbanded in September 2014, marking the end of an era. However, their legacy lives on through the street names of Graven Hill and in the memories of those who served.
