Unit: Royal Logistic Corps - 821 EOD Squadron, 11 EOD Regiment

Captain Dan Read was killed in an IED blast whilst on task supporting Battle Group (North West) in Afghanistan. He was a High Threat IED Disposal Operator who dealt with 32 IEDs during his deployment.

Friend Way

Died: 1961
Role: Director of Labour for the Pioneer Corps (1939-1946)

Major General Ali Friend was in charge of the Pioneer Corps from its formation in 1939 until 1946. Under his leadership, the Corps grew to become one of the largest in the Army, managing 166,000 UK personnel and 400,000 Pioneers from across the Commonwealth.

Roberts Drive

Age: 32
Died: 18 April 2012
Operation: Operation HERRICK 16
Unit: 23 Pioneer Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps

Corporal “Ginge” Roberts was a Section Commander leading an Advanced Search Team. He was killed alongside Private Silibaravi in a mortar rocket strike whilst deployed to Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand province. A road is also named after him in his hometown of Middlesbrough.

Silibaravi Drive

Age: 32
Died: 18 April 2012
Operation: Operation HERRICK 16
Unit: 23 Pioneer Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps

Private “Sili” Silibaravi was an Advanced Searcher responsible for detecting IEDs. Born in Fiji, he joined the British Army in 2002 and served in Iraq and Afghanistan multiple times. He was killed alongside Corporal Roberts in a mortar rocket strike.

Wood Crescent

Died: 2010
Operation: Operation HERRICK
Unit: 23 Pioneer Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps

WO2 Charlie Wood was killed by an IED explosion whilst clearing a road route in Afghanistan. He was one of “The Three Pioneers” - the last three Pioneers killed on operations.

Tancred Grove

Age: 43
Died: 5 December 1943
Operation: Battle of Monte Camino, Italy
Unit: 187 Company, Pioneer Corps
Role: Stretcher Bearer

Private Tancred died of exhaustion after carrying a wounded officer for 16 hours through dangerous mountain terrain during the Battle of Monte Camino. He worked for 72 hours without sleep or rest, and collapsed after delivering the wounded officer to an Advanced Dressing Station.

Chadwick Place

Died: January 2009
Operation: Operation HERRICK (Afghanistan)
Unit: 23 Pioneer Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps
Role: Section Commander

Sergeant ‘The Chadmeister General’ Chadwick served at St David’s Barracks throughout his 13 years’ service. He contracted a mystery virus while serving in Afghanistan and sadly passed away in January 2009 after returning from his second tour.

Hull Lane

Died: 28 March 2003
Operation: Operation Telic (Iraq)
Unit: The Blues & Royals, Household Cavalry Regiment (transferred from 23 Pioneer Regiment RLC)
Role: Cavalry Soldier

Lance Corporal of Horse Matty Hull was killed in a suspected friendly fire incident in southern Iraq in March 2003. He had transferred into The Blues & Royals from 23 Pioneer Regiment RLC.

Elliott Crescent

Died: 21 March 2007
Unit: Royal Pioneer Corps
Role: Corps Secretary (1978-1989)

Major Bill Elliott served the Royal Pioneer Corps for 66 years. He was Corps Secretary from 1978 to 1989 and Treasurer of the Royal Pioneer Association and Benevolent Fund from 1989 to 2006. His military career began in 1940 and included service in Normandy on D-Day, India, Germany, Aden, and Bahrain. He wrote the History of Royal Pioneers from 1945-1993.
